Can Chewing Gum Help Prevent Cavities?

New clinical evidence has shown that certain types of chewing gum can actually help to prevent tooth decay. Many gum brands have now opted for xylitol as a sugar substitute. Xylitol is an all natural sugar substitute typically made from birch-tree bark.  By chewing gum with xylitol added after meals you will:

  • Remove food debris from the deep crevices and grooves on the chewing surfaces.
  • Stimulate saliva production to help wash away harmful bacteria.
  • Balance out the oral pH and buffer the acid produced by bacteria which results in enamel breakdown.

Don’t forget to check the nutrition label to ensure your gum is both sugar-free and has xylitol as a listed ingredient!
